1

Day 1: Moshi to Machame Gate to Machame Camp (3,000 m)

Your 6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Hiking Tour begins in Moshi with a short drive to Machame Gate, located on the southern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. After completing park registration and meeting your professional mountain crew, you begin your climb through the beautiful rainforest zone.

The first hiking day introduces you to Kilimanjaro's natural beauty, with tall trees, colorful plants, and the sounds of birds surrounding the trail. Your guide will set a comfortable pace while helping you adjust to the mountain environment.

After approximately 5–6 hours of hiking, you arrive at Machame Camp (3,000 m), where your crew prepares your first mountain dinner and overnight stay surrounded by the peaceful rainforest.

2

Day 2: Machame Camp (3,000 m) to Shira Camp (3,840 m)

After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and continue climbing through the moorland zone toward the beautiful Shira Plateau. The landscape changes dramatically as you move higher, with giant heathers, volcanic rocks, and wide views of Mount Kibo appearing along the way.

The trail becomes more open and scenic, offering excellent opportunities to take photos of the mountain and the valleys below. Your guide maintains a steady pace to support proper acclimatization.

You spend the night at Shira Camp (3,840 m), where you can enjoy breathtaking sunset views across the plateau.

3

Day 3: Shira Camp (3,840 m) to Lava Tower (4,600 m) to Barranco Camp (3,960 m)

Today is an important acclimatization day on the 6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Hiking Tour. You climb higher toward Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp, allowing your body to adjust to the increasing altitude.

The trail crosses the alpine desert zone, where vegetation becomes sparse and the volcanic landscape creates a unique Kilimanjaro experience. At Lava Tower (4,600 m), your guide monitors your condition before you begin the descent.

The descent to Barranco Camp (3,960 m) offers beautiful views of the Southern Glaciers and the impressive Barranco Wall, one of the most famous sections of the Machame Route.

4

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,960 m) to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640 m)

After breakfast, you start the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall. The climb involves some scrambling over rocks, but your guide will assist you through the more challenging sections. From the top of the wall, you continue across ridges and valleys with impressive views of Kilimanjaro's southern slopes.

You then hike through the alpine desert toward Karanga Camp, where you take a short break before continuing to Barafu Camp (4,640 m). The landscape becomes increasingly dry and rocky as you approach the final camp before the summit.

You arrive at Barafu Camp in the afternoon and have time to rest, eat, and prepare your equipment for the summit attempt. Your guide will provide a summit briefing, as you will begin the final ascent later tonight.

5

Day 5: Barafu Camp (4,640 m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) to Mweka Camp (3,100 m)

Your summit attempt begins around midnight. You climb slowly through the darkness over volcanic scree toward Stella Point (5,739 m). This is the most demanding part of the climb due to the altitude and steep terrain, so you maintain a steady pace with regular short breaks.

After reaching Stella Point, you continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest free-standing mountain summit in Africa. After reaching the summit, you have time to take photos and enjoy the views before beginning your descent.

You descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down toward Mweka Camp (3,100 m). The descent takes you through the upper alpine zones and gradually back into the rainforest.

6

Day 6: Mweka Camp (3,100 m) to Mweka Gate

After breakfast, you begin the final descent from Mweka Camp through the lush rainforest. The trail becomes greener and wetter as you lose altitude, with a chance to see different plant species and birds along the way.

You continue downhill to Mweka Gate, where you complete the park exit procedures and say goodbye to your mountain crew. After receiving your summit certificates, your driver will meet you at the gate and transfer you back to Moshi.

Your 6-day Machame Route Kilimanjaro climb ends in Moshi, where you can relax and enjoy a well-earned rest after completing your trek.

6 Days Machame Route FAQs

Everything you need to know before climbing Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route.

The 6 Days Machame Route is one of the most popular trekking routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Whiskey Route”, it approaches the mountain from the southern side and passes through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the Arctic summit zone. The route reaches Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters and includes important acclimatization sections such as the climb to Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp.
The Machame Route offers spectacular scenery including views of Mount Meru, the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and the southern glaciers. It provides better acclimatization than shorter routes through gradual altitude gain and the “climb high, sleep low” approach, making it suitable for both experienced hikers and well-prepared first-time climbers.
The route is considered challenging but achievable. It does not require technical climbing skills, but good fitness, endurance, and mental preparation are important. Most days involve 5–8 hours of trekking, while summit day can take 12–15 hours. The main challenge is altitude rather than difficult terrain. Walking slowly and staying hydrated are key to success.
Yes. The 6-day itinerary is a popular and well-balanced duration. It includes key acclimatization points, especially the climb to Lava Tower (approx. 4,600 m) before descending to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps the body adapt before the final summit attempt.
The route has a good summit success rate when guided properly with controlled pacing. Success depends on fitness, acclimatization, weather, hydration, nutrition, and individual response to altitude. Following your guide’s instructions and maintaining a slow pace significantly improve your chances.
Public toilets are available at official camps. For greater comfort and privacy, climbers can request a private portable toilet as an optional extra.
All meals are freshly prepared by a professional mountain cook. Breakfast typically includes porridge, eggs, fruit, bread, and hot drinks. Lunch and dinner feature rice, pasta, potatoes, vegetables, soups, meat or chicken, and fresh fruit. Vegetarian, vegan, and allergy-friendly options can be arranged with advance notice.
No. Porters carry your main duffel bag, camping equipment, and food supplies. You only carry a small daypack with water, snacks, camera, rain jacket, and extra layers.
Essential items include waterproof hiking boots, warm layers, rain jacket, thermal clothing, gloves, hat, sleeping bag, trekking poles, headlamp, sunglasses, and water bottles. The route passes through multiple climate zones, so proper layering is important. Equipment rental is available in Moshi if needed.
Our guides monitor climbers daily for symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness, or unusual fatigue. The itinerary includes acclimatization sections to help reduce risk. If symptoms appear, the guide may recommend rest, slower pacing, or descent depending on severity.
