Trip Overview

This full-day tour to Materuni Waterfall and a traditional Chagga coffee farm offers a peaceful and authentic Tanzanian experience just outside of Moshi. Perfect for couples, nature lovers, and cultural explorers, the trip combines scenic hiking, a visit to one of the highest waterfalls at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, and an interactive coffee-making tour in a local village. Materuni is the last village before the Kilimanjaro Forest begins, and its home to the Chagga people, known for their warm hospitality and coffee-growing traditions. You'll hike through lush green hills, banana and avocado plantations, and small farms to reach the impressive Materuni Waterfall, which plunges over 70 meters into a clear, cool pool, great for photos, and even a refreshing dip if you're brave! After the hike, you’ll visit a local coffee farm where you’ll learn how coffee is grown, harvested, and processed, then roast, grind, and enjoy your own cup of fresh Chagga coffee, made the traditional way. This tour is a beautiful mix of light adventure, culture, nature, and relaxation, all in one unforgettable day.

Itinerary:

08:00 AM – Pick-up from your hotel
Your guide will collect you from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. After a scenic drive through the countryside, you’ll arrive at the village of Materuni, located in the lush foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro.

10:00 AM – Arrival and start of hike
You’ll begin a guided walk through the village and surrounding forests. Learn about local plants, crops, and traditions as you make your way to the waterfall.

11:00 AM – Visit to Materuni Waterfall
After about a 45-minute walk, you’ll reach the stunning waterfall. Take time to relax, explore, take photos, and, if the weather allows, take a dip in the natural pool beneath the falls.

12:30 PM – Traditional Chagga lunch (optional)
You’ll return to the village for a freshly prepared local meal (vegetarian options available). This is a great way to experience local flavors and hospitality.

01:30 PM – Coffee tour and tasting
Join a local farmer and learn the entire coffee-making process, from picking the beans to roasting and grinding. Sing traditional songs, join the roasting process, and enjoy your own handmade cup of coffee, fresh and organic.

03:00 PM – Drive back to your hotel
After a relaxed afternoon in the village, you’ll head back to Moshi or Arusha.

05:00 PM – Drop-off at your hotel
You’ll arrive back with beautiful memories and maybe even some locally grown coffee to take home.
