At 09:00am driver will come to pick you from your hotel by the private comfortable car for the group according to your number in Moshi with your guide for a short briefing before meet with your local guide. The drive from Moshi to Materuni village is 35 to 40 minutes and this is depended on the weather of that day if its rain it can take even 50 minutes to 1 hour because of rough road where there is mud. Upon arrival in Materuni village you’ll meet your local guide for a short briefing and register at the village office before the hike.

At 10:00am when you complete with registration, you’ll start a walk-through banana farm, coffee farms, and the green rainforest. Your guide will explain to you Chagga culture and local plants where banana plants is common in Chagga tribe and this is their common traditional food where they use banana to make it, they have banana soup “mtori” this is nice when someone didn’t take a food for long you can start with this banana hot soup and follow with the other food, another one is banana mix with beans the common name is “kiburu”, banana mix with milk “kitawa” banana mix with meat “machalari” all of those made with banana plant. And also, used to make a traditional drink called banana beer. And along the way if its clear day you can have the chance to see Mount Kilimanjaro.

After 50 minutes of walking, you will reach the beautiful Materuni waterfall, here you will have the time to take a lot of photos, group photos, one by one photos as you wish, and also you will relax, swimming and enjoy the fresh air. We did not limit our guest to have the time to stay here, but because of having other activities like coffee tour, at least the guest can spend here 50 to 1 hour which can make you to have good time to complete all activities with no rush. After that you can move from there to coffee tour where it’s not too far from the waterfall. Along the way there is village people sell their handmade crafts, drawings so you can have the time to take a look and if it’s okay to you, you can buy it.

Upon arrival at the Chagga coffee tour, here is the place where you can take a very short rest about 20-minute, drink water and also you can have a chance to drink a local banana beer, where if it’s included to your itinerary, you can have it free but if it’s not included, they sell it $5, and you can enjoy the beautiful nature where birds sing here and there.

After a short break, your local guide will start guide you and tells you about coffee tour, where he can guide your from how the coffee it grows to how they make it. The first thing, you will see the machine which used in preparation of coffee where it’s pilled the coffee bean and there after they dry it by sun. Then the guide will take the sun-dried coffee beans. He will pound them gently in a wooden mortar. This helps to remove the dry outer skins. Then he will toss them in the air to blow away the chaff. After that the beans are clean and ready you will have the chance to roast it by yourself in order to experience and this its if is okay to you.

After that, the guide will take the roasted beans from the fire and put them in a big mortar to pound them into coffee powder and also you can do it as well if you want to experience enough and in this is a funny part because the other people with your guide, they will sing the local Swahili songs with drums this it can make the visitors to pound the coffee with excitement and doesn’t stop until the coffee powder is ready. At the same time, he will already have hot water boiling on the local stove. Once the coffee powder is ready, he will add it to the hot water so it’s ready to drink. And here you can have a sit and take some coffee while waiting for your lunch.

After taking a cup of coffee your lunch will be ready and served in traditional dishes. This is the time to enjoy your delicious meal while sharing stories with your fellows because you went as a group and its okay to make stories with the local people of Materuni where they will also explain how they live. This makes the experience even better because you get to learn more about the culture, not just coffee making and hiking.
