Overview
This 4-day private safari takes you to two of Southern Tanzania’s most exciting wildlife destinations: Mikumi National Park and Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve). It's a perfect short safari for travelers who want to enjoy big game viewing and natural beauty without traveling too far from Dar es Salaam. Mikumi National Park is known for its open plains, which are home to elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, lions, and many more animals. The park is easy to reach and offers great wildlife viewing, especially for first-time safari-goers. Nyerere National Park is one of the largest protected areas in Africa. It offers a more remote and wild experience, with rivers, lakes, and dense bush full of elephants, hippos, crocodiles, birds, and even African wild dogs. One of the highlights here is the boat safari on the Rufiji River, where you can spot animals up close while enjoying the calm water and natural surroundings.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Drive from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi - Afternoon Game Drive
Your safari begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel or the airport in Dar es Salaam. You’ll drive through the countryside and local villages on the way to Mikumi National Park, a journey of about 5–6 hours. Arrive in time for lunch and a short rest at your lodge. In the afternoon, enjoy your first game drive in Mikumi. Look for elephants, giraffes, zebras, impalas, and maybe even lions or leopards. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Morning Game Drive - Drive to Nyerere National Park (Selous)
After an early breakfast, take a short morning game drive to catch animals while they are most active. Then, begin your drive to Nyerere National Park, which takes about 5–6 hours through scenic landscapes and small towns. Arrive at your camp or lodge in the afternoon. Relax after the journey, enjoy the peaceful setting, and have dinner under the stars.
Day 3: Full Day in Nyerere – Game Drive and Boat Safari
Today is your full day to explore Nyerere National Park. After breakfast, set out on a game drive to search for elephants, buffalos, giraffes, lions, antelopes, and many types of birds. In the afternoon, enjoy a boat safari on the Rufiji River. This is a relaxing and exciting way to see hippos, crocodiles, and water birds up close. The river safari is often a favorite part of the trip. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Morning Walking Safari – Drive Back to Dar es Salaam
Start your final day with a short-guided walking safari (if available), giving you a chance to learn about animal tracks, plants, and the smaller details of the bush that you don’t see from a vehicle. After breakfast, begin your drive back to Dar es Salaam with a packed lunch. Arrive in the late afternoon and be dropped off at your hotel. Safari ends here.
