How to Travel Between Masai Mara and Serengeti
Here we list the best ways to travel to Serengeti National Park from Masai Mara or Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. While the Masai Mara National Reserve and Serengeti National Park are adjacent, separated only by the Kenya-Tanzania border, crossing from one to the other isn’t as straightforward as it appears on a map. Below is detailed information on traveling by road and air from Masai Mara, as well as options for reaching Serengeti via Nairobi for international travelers from the USA, UK, Canada, Europe, Australia, India, and Dubai. Contact us for international flight options.
By Road
Although not the most preferred mode of transport, traveling by road from Masai Mara to Serengeti is possible through two main border crossings: Isebania to the west and Namanga to the east.
Crossing at Isebania
You can cross the border just west of Masai Mara and Serengeti at the Isebania border post. However, the roads on both sides are bumpy and uncomfortable, and the journey from Masai Mara to a Serengeti camp via Isebania can take over half a day, excluding potential delays at the border (1-3 hours). An overnight stay is often required.
Crossing at Namanga
The Namanga route is a better option for those avoiding flights while still wanting to enjoy safaris in both countries. Although the roads are more comfortable, Namanga is farther from both Masai Mara and Serengeti. Additionally, a vehicle permit is required when crossing the border, which can be costly. Alternatively, you can cross on foot and arrange for a travel agency to pick you up on the Tanzanian side. Overall, road travel can be time-consuming and may not be cost-effective compared to air travel, depending on group size.
By Air
Flying is the most popular and efficient way to travel from Masai Mara to Serengeti National Park. Two primary flight options are available, offering convenience and speed.
Option A: Masai Mara - Migori Airstrip - Tarime Airstrip - Serengeti
This route involves flying to Migori Airstrip on the Kenyan side near Isebania, crossing the border by road, and then taking a flight from Tarime Airstrip to Serengeti’s Seronera Airstrip. This service is available only during peak tourist season, and border crossing times can vary.
Typical Flight Timings:
- Masai Mara to Migori Airstrip: Depart 08:45 AM, Arrive 09:30 AM
- Tarime Airstrip to Seronera Airstrip, Serengeti: Depart 13:20, Arrive 14:15
Option B: Masai Mara - Nairobi Wilson - Kilimanjaro Tanzania - Seronera Airstrip
Another option is flying from Masai Mara to Nairobi Wilson Airport, then to Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, and finally to Seronera Airstrip in Serengeti. This route is ideal for those combining international travel through Nairobi. To travel from Serengeti to Masai Mara, simply reverse the route.
Typical Flight Timings:
- Masai Mara to Nairobi Wilson: Depart 11:00 AM, Arrive 12:30 PM
- Nairobi Wilson to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania: Depart 13:15, Arrive 14:10
